It’s a pretty intimate thing to invite a photographer into your home. It’s where your whole heart resides, the places where you argue and make up, and laugh and learn and play, cook, read, and parent…it can be hard to ask a stranger to step into your world. I try to make every family I meet, feel comfortable enough to go about their daily routine, without feeling like they have to be “perfect” or have children who sit quietly. In fact, I want to capture REAL life, not any sort of facade. I got to hang out with the H. Family in Mt. Pleasant on a rainy fall day, and it was wonderful on so many levels.
They have a beautiful set of twins (let’s be honest, photographers love twins!), and one of the girls is in my son’s class at school. The family is good friends of ours, which made this session an extra fun one. Mia and Peter wanted to document a regular day at home, so we kept things relaxed. We did a little “cooking (hardboiled eggs), some scootering, and time with toys and treasures. Our little one-hour session was filled to the brim with adventuring and the routines and rituals of their day. I loved watching these kids in their element, I believe this is where the most meaningful images are made. They are real moments that you can connect with over time, for years to come. Creating this kind of work for families is really what makes my heart happy and brings my soul joy!
