{beyond the headshot} capturing simple wellbeing | washington dc head shot photographer

linda is the owner of

simple wellbeing – a robust health coaching business that reflects linda’s own strong, vivacious, dedicated personality and has helped hundreds of men and women change their relationships to food and fitness. Linda and I know each other’s businesses well – we’re members together in a small private group of women business owners, and also members of a larger organization called Her Corner which I highly recommend to women business owners.

When Linda and I started talking about a {beyond the headshot} session, she had already had one photo shoot a few months earlier. While she liked many of the photos, she felt something was missing – and as we talked about her “Shots Wish List” we realized what was missing was the liveliness of Linda in action, doing what she loves. Linda radiates health and vitality, and she shares her passion energetically with her clients. That is what Linda wanted to capture. I might not be the best head shot photographer in Washington DC, but I know what it is to be a creative woman in business for herself, and I knew I could capture images that Linda would love.

Linda wanted images from a cooking class, as well as images of herself in nature – a huge source of inspiration to her – and shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables. We took advantage of an already-scheduled class for the first portion of Linda’s {beyond the headshot}. I was in love with our results – and to be sure I was on the right track with Linda’s vision, I had her first round of images edited and ready for her before our second shoot three days later, because her feedback was essential to a successful shoot. She loved them!

For the second portion of Linda’s {beyond the headshot} wish list, we met early Saturday morning. My professional make-up artist arrived ahead of me to give Linda a professional touch – which I find most helpful when shooting in multiple locations or outdoors where temperatures might change during the shoot. Linda wanted a very natural look in keeping with the radiant and naturally healthy themes of her brand. (Professional make up is included in my {beyond the headshot} sessions.)

I had a very definite vision for Linda’s outdoor and produce market shots. After listening to her desires, I chose Woodend Audubon Sanctuary for the nature shots, for its variety of wooded spots in a small area; and I knew for sure I wanted to take her to Eastern Market for the produce market shots – it’s a recognizable spot for Washingtonians, has indoor and outdoor market areas, and reliably great lighting.

Spending time with Linda and collaborating with her to create these images was so inspiring and satisfying. Her skills as a chef and her talent at teaching other people about healthy food, her vitality and strength, her almost girlish delight in lovely fresh ingredients and her flinty dedication to building the business she wants — these things all make me feel absurdly lucky to get to photograph her. Women like Linda are why I love my work. And I hope she loves these images and sees the very best of herself smiling out from them.

xo, Katie
