No matter the kind of session a family wants, I try to shoot with the same heart and style. Yes, some families desire a traditional feel, with coordinated outfits and a few poses….others desire a documentary-inspired, lifestyle session without a rigid schedule. Neither is “better”, and each holds potential to bring my client’s dreams to life. This newborn session was with Katie and David, who just welcomed their brand new son, Tommy. Tommy was born into a loving family, and has a best buddy already built-in: his big brother Charlie. The family wanted a more traditional session, with coordinated outfits, posing and direction, and they even had specific shots and props they wanted included because of the meaning to them. My goal was to do this with an eye to the emotional connection between parents and children, and with a sensitivity to the new bonds being forged between brothers. I especially loved that Katie and David didn’t force sibling shots, but let Charlie set the tone with his new, complex role. We did get some beautiful photos of the boys together, and maintained everyone’s happiness while doing so!
Of course, we can’t forget their final family member: pup Lulu! She’s a special kind of dog with lots of personality, and her patience with a rambunctious toddler is matched by her curious interest and gentle tolerance of this new little member of the household. Katie and David have such a sweet family and I’m so excited to join them for a second “first year” through the Annual Pass Membership, just like we did when Charlie was born. It’s always such an honor to witness families growing and learning together.
