{family} rooftop summer session | washington dc documentary family photographer

documenting your family in photography

is rich, bold, raw, authentic, sweet and powerful. Showing up as your own self, putting aside expectations and Pinterest-driven ideas of how you and your family *ought* to look for photos is brave and freeing. I wish there was a good way to inject more mamas with a greediness for their own real visual stories. For all those moms that are already “natural carriers” of the documentary bug, let me capture your crazy beautiful family!

Like Jessica and Matt’s family – with a brand new baby and an adorably precocious toddler.

Rather than hold on to the tried-and-true family portrait session, they leapt at my summer nights mini session, and we scheduled for me to come over one hot summer evening to play in their condo’s roof-top courtyard. I love the rich city-life feel of this session – the gentle clash of Washington skyline with sweet mama and baby snuggles. Blowing bubbles high above the noisy streets. Sunset from 10 stories up.

May your summer nights be the stuff of sweet memories.
