Photography Session FAQ

Q. How early should I book my session? 

A. I typically book 3-6 weeks out for family sessions, and newborn sessions book 1-3 months in advance. I occasionally have more immediate openings – it’s worth checking with me, especially if you are looking to book a newborn session and the baby has already arrived!

 

Q. What are the steps for booking a session?

A. First we should email or talk by phone. I’d love to know what time frame you’re thinking of for photos, who all will be included in the session, and what ideas you have for how you’ll use your photos after our session (photos for the walls in your home, gifts for family, an album, etc). When you’re ready to book, I’ll send an invoice for your session fee – it’s due when you book your session. We finalize the date, and I’ll check in with you ahead of our appointment to remind you and answer any last minute questions you might have.

 

Q. What if I need to reschedule or cancel my session? 

A. Life definitely has a way of altering our best laid plans. In case of inclement weather, we can reschedule one time, and if we encounter poor weather on our new date, I may suggest we opt for an indoor session depending on my availability to reschedule a second time. In cases of sickness or other unforeseen events, please give me as much notice as possible. In cases of sports games or optional sorts of scheduling conflicts, I ask that your honor your appointment with me. Cancellations are rare. Your session fee is non-refundable, so I encourage you to reschedule, even if its several months in the future.

 

Q. Session fees are non-refundable? 

A. Correct, session fees are non-refundable. If you feel you have extenuating circumstances I welcome you to check with me, but I am most likely to stick to my policy for fairness.

 

Q. Do I need to choose my collection when I book?

A. You should wait to choose your collection till you’ve seen your photos! It’s good to have an idea what your budget is for investing in photos, and I’ll talk to you about your plans (prints, frames, albums, etc.) but you don’t have to make a final choice until you see your proofs.

 

Q. Do you have a minimum purchase amount?

A. I don’t. You are free to choose what you love and need the most.

 

Q. Do you have a time frame for completing orders?

A. Yes. Your proofs gallery will be available for seven days. Whether we meet in person for your order, or work together another way, you should make your selections within that 7 days. After 7 days, there will be a $50 administrative fee to keep your gallery on my web server for 15 days. Not to be nasty — just because I pay for the space I use, and need to rotate older galleries out for new galleries. Leaving galleries up longer means I need to keep more space on hand.

 

Q. Do you offer digital files apart from a Collection? 

A. It’s an option. I’ll be completely open-hearted honest with you on this: I am sad when someone purchases only digital files, because 9 times out of 10, those files stay on their computers forever. Maybe they get shared to Facebook… where they disappear from view in a few days or weeks. We all mean to get them printed… And when you do get them printed, you might wonder why your Shutterfly print doesn’t have the same zing that you saw on your computer screen. That’s not your imagination: consumer labs rely on volume to make a profit, and print “quick and dirty” without attention to calibration and product quality. Colors and exposures may be off, and your prints will not last as long. So… yes I do sell digital files only, in a set with a box of beautifully printed proofs.  I want you to immediately enjoy the fruits of your investment with photos to hang on your walls and albums for you and your children to enjoy for years to come.

 

Q. I can apply my session fee to the purchase of a Collection, but not a la carte, right?

A. That’s right! And please note: digital file sets are a la carte items.

 

Q. Can I just pick a la carte items if a Collection is not right for me? 

A. Of course!

 

Q. Do you offer gift certificates? 

A. Definitely! I can even package them beautifully for gifting. You can gift the session fee, or the session fee + a print product or collection.
